About this tour

Best season: Mid-May to end of September (summertime is most reliable for road access and green meadows).

The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek is one of the most scenic and accessible treks in northern Pakistan. Located in the Nagar Valley near Minapin, this moderate-level trek offers breathtaking views of Rakaposhi (7,788 m) — the world’s 27th highest peak — along with stunning glaciers, alpine meadows, and vibrant mountain villages. The trail passes through Hapakun Camp and leads to the Rakaposhi Base Camp at around 3,500 meters, providing panoramic views of the mighty Rakaposhi and Diran peaks.

It’s an ideal trek for adventure lovers who want to experience the beauty of the Karakoram without the need for technical climbing. The combination of natural beauty, local hospitality, and cultural richness makes it one of the most rewarding short treks in Pakistan.

Itinerary

  • Activity: Arrival, meet & greet, transfer to hotel.
  • Evening: Group briefing: trek plan, gear check, medical/insurance checks, driver & guide introductions, distribute porter allocation if used.
  • Overnight: Islamabad.

  • Approx driving: 12–14 hours if via Karakoram Highway (KKH) with overnight stops as required; many groups break the drive in Besham/Chilas/Gilgit depending on departure time. KKH is the all-season road to Gilgit; Babusar route is a seasonal alternative (see Day 8 notes).
  • What to expect: Scenic mountain driving, stops for refreshments and view-points (Junction Point, rivers).
  • Arrival: Minapin village (trailhead area). Transfer to a guesthouse/teahouse in Minapin. Trek briefing and light walk to test boots.
  • Overnight: Minapin.
  • Altitude reference: Minapin sits at lower alpine elevation (trailhead for Rakaposhi treks).

  • Trek time & difficulty: 3 hours, moderate; trail is stepped and steadily uphill. Distance 5–6 km with 700–800 m ascent depending on starting point.
  • Highlights: Scenic trail along the glacier moraines; views of Rakaposhi and Diran.
  • Camp: Hapakun (first campsite) — tents or established campsites / shepherd huts depending on operator.
  • Overnight: Hapakun (Hapakun 2,800 m).

  • Trek time & difficulty: 2–4 hours (trail eases off then crosses moraines/glacier approach). Easy-to-moderate but requires caution crossing moraine/glacial sections.
  • Altitude: Rakaposhi BC (often referred to as Tagaphari) is commonly cited around 3,300–4,150 m depending on camp location; guides usually place camp on moraine/flat above the glacier.
  • Highlights: Close, dramatic views of Rakaposhi (7,788 m) and neighboring peaks; evening and sunrise photo opportunities.
  • Overnight: Rakaposhi Base Camp (camping in tents).

  • Activity: Day hike to Kachali (Kacheli) Lake — alpine lake excursion. Trek to lake approx. 2–4 hours (round trip time depends on chosen micro-route). Kacheli Lake sits at roughly 3,970 m and is a high alpine lake offering spectacular reflections of the surrounding peaks.
  • Difficulty: Moderate — steeper final sections; short glacier / moraine crossings possible.
  • Return: Back to Rakaposhi BC for second night at camp — relax, photograph, stargaze.

  • Trek time & difficulty: 4–6 hours total depending on pace, easier downhill. Cross glacier/ moraine sections carefully.
  • Afternoon: Arrive Minapin — rest, hot tea, celebrate completion of trek.
  • Overnight: Minapin guesthouse (hot shower if available, village interaction).

  • Drive: Short drive from Minapin to Karimabad (Hunza); leisurely arrival midday.
  • Activities: Baltit Fort & Altit Fort visits, Duiker sunset viewpoint, local bazaar, walnut cake café.
  • Overnight: Hunza (Karimabad).
  • Notes: A good rest/recovery day after trek; allow time for laundry, rest and local short walks.

  • Preferred route (seasonal): Hunza → Naran via Babusar Pass (if the Babusar route is open); scenic and shorter route into Kaghan/Naran. But Babusar is seasonal (often closed in winter/shoulder seasons); if closed, proceed via the Karakoram Highway (KKH) toward Besham and then N35 route to Naran area — overnight in Besham if needed.
  • Overnight: Naran (if Babusar open) or Besham (if diversion via KKH required).

  • Drive time: 6–8 hours depending on route & stops. Return to Islamabad, final debrief, optional city tour or shopping in the evening.
  • Overnight: Islamabad.

  • Activity: Transfer to Islamabad International Airport according to flight time. Farewells
